Budget guide

The real cost of owning a boat in Australia.

The sticker price is not the budget. The real number includes the boat, motor, trailer, safety gear, insurance, servicing, fuel, storage and the “while I’m here” chandlery tax. Dangerous place, that shop.

New versus used

New boats cost more upfront but may bring warranty confidence. Used boats can be excellent value, especially simple alloy rigs, but condition matters. Budget for an independent inspection if you are not mechanically confident.

Finance mindset

If financing, calculate repayments plus annual running costs. A boat that is affordable to buy but too expensive to use is just a decorative trailer. Keep enough spare cash for maintenance and safety upgrades.

Next, compare boat types so your budget matches your actual boating.
